Many of his works have been purchased for public galleries, Manchester having purchased two of his works for their permanent collection. Emsley had to carve his own career from childhood and went to work at ten years of age in a chemist's shop, at two shillings weekly, his time as errand boy being from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Here he was blinded for two weeks through the explosion of a retort containing sulphuric acid.
