Walter Prell was born in 1857 in Leipzig. Prell was a student at the Düsseldorf and Paris academies. At the Academie Julian, he studied under Jean-Paul Laurens and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant. He then worked as a landscape painter in Paris and Munich. His brother Hermann Prell (1854-1922) was also a painter and sculptor, as well as professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden.
