Walter L. Brendel studied, after autodidactic beginnings, from 1946 to 1948 in Munich with K. Caspar. During this time, he preferred to work on realistic landscape and figure paintings with motifs from the surroundings of his studio in Feldwies, on Lake Chiemsee. In 1948, he turned to abstract painting, to which material collages were added in the 1960s and 1970s.
