Xu Xi was born in Shaoxing in Zhejiang Province in 1940. He studied at the Art Academy Zhejiang from 1956-1965. After graduation he used to work for the Beijing Art Press, among others as a painter, cartoonist and graphic artist in the creative department. He became famous for his landscape paintings which he executed in wash and ink drawings. He is a member of the Chinese Artists Association and nowadays lives in the United States and China.
