Yuan Xiaocen was an artist of traditional Chinese painting, a sculptor, and a professor. He was born in Puding County, Guizhou Province. He was self-taught except for some instruction by Gao Jianfu and Gao Qifeng from the Lingnan Area. When enrolled in the Department of Literature and History in Yunnan University in 1938, he specialized in traditional Chinese painting, sculpture and poems. He sold paintings to pay his tuition fee. When enrolled in the Department of Literature and History in Yunnan University in 1938, he specialized in traditional Chinese painting, sculpture and poems. He sold paintings to pay his tuition fee. At that time, he was fortunate to receive instruction by Mr. Xu Beihong, a master of Chinese painting. He organized the Gufeng Painting Academy with some of his friends and held exhibitions to salute the Liberation Army. After his graduation, he sold his works and taught at a school.
