In his early years, he studied painting under Wang Xuetao, Qin Zhongwen, and Hu Peiheng, developing a strong foundation in traditional Chinese art. In 1936, Sun became a student of Zhang Daqian, with whom he maintained a close mentorship for 47 years. He even resided with Zhang during Zhang’s time in Brazil, absorbing his master’s techniques and artistic philosophy. After Zhang Daqian’s passing, Sun Yunsheng took responsibility for preserving and caring for Zhang’s life works of sketches, underscoring his role as both a devoted disciple and custodian of Zhang’s legacy.
