Anthony Carey Stannus was born in Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim. He entered the Government School of Design, Belfast in 1850 and later attended the Training School for Masters in London. He worked as an art master in Dowlais, Wales which opened in 1855 and was known for its large Irish population. During his career Stannus executed a number of commissions for the local history department at the Ulster Museum. He exhibited widely with the Royal Scottish Society, the Belfast Fine Art Society and the RHA among others. He also traveled widely and was appointed correspondent for the Illustrated London News while in Mexico in 1866.
