His grandfather, William Watkins Waite, was a miniaturist, and his father, a Congregationalist minister, did a bit of amateur watercolour painting. He was born in Letterhead, in the Surrey Hills in 1854. He traveled to Canada in the 1870's after his primary education, where he worked as a lumberjack for two years sketching his journey. His grandfather, William Watkins Waite, was a miniaturist, and his father, a Congregationalist minister, did a bit of amateur watercolour painting.
