He first studied with his father and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (1906-1908). Since 1898, he participated in various exhibitions in St. Petersburg. A solo exhibition of his work was held in Moscow in 1910. From 1902-1906 and 1909-1917 he taught at an art school in St. Petersburg.
