He was educated privately, then at the 4th Real Gymnasium in Warsaw, graduating with distinction in 1850. He ran his farm in an exemplary manner, introduced modern methods of cultivation and animal husbandry, established winter schools for rural children, and released peasants from serfdom, transferring them to rent.
