    Wladyslaw Rawicz (1832–1863) – a landowner, social activist, and participant in the January Uprising – was born on September 2, 1832, in Warsaw, to Aleksander Jan Rawicz, a banker and landowner, and Marianna née Gutman. He was educated privately, then at the 4th Real Gymnasium in Warsaw, graduating with distinction in 1850. He studied agronomy at the Agricultural Academy in Hohenheim near Stuttgart, and after returning to Poland, he took over the Grochów estate in Wegrów County. He ran his farm in an exemplary manner, introduced modern methods of cultivation and animal husbandry, established winter schools for rural children, and released peasants from serfdom, transferring them to rent.
