Active in Antwerp, Jacob and his son Abel Grimmer became specialized in making small panels depicting religious scenes - Parables or life of Christ mainly- standing in the heart of the Brabant countryside. Both artists were able to reconcile the simplification of natural motifs with an innate sense of reality.

Pastel shades, roses moated castles, characters who walk calmly in the eternally summer landscapes represent a personal and poetic vision, the son going further than the father in the simplification of forms and the mapping of the compositions. The two painters favored the tondi and executed many cycles of the four seasons and the twelve months of the year, unfortunately often dismantled....
