In 1906, he became a full-time painter, and two years later, moved to San Diego where he lived the remainder of his life and took on a huge commission by Ellen Browning Scripps to record all of the wildflowers of California. He worked on this project from 1909 to 1918, and the result was 1200 watercolor paintings in fifty-two portfolios.
