    Aleksander Makovsky (Russian, 1860-1924) was born in Moscow, the son of well-known painter Vladimir Makovsky. He was a graduate of the Moscow School of Painting Sculpture and Architecture in 1880, he continued his training at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg in 1894 where he studied under Ilya Repin.

    Well known for his portraits of notable aristocrats as well as members of the Royal family, Makovsky’s depictions of country life are among his most beloved works. His curiosity led him to travel extensively into distant towns and villages where rural traditions remained strong.
