Alessandro Tiarini was born in Bologna in 1577 and trained with Prospero Fontana, the father of his godmother Lavinia Fontana. He was one of the most successful artists in Emilia during the first half of the seventeenth century. Tiarini's artwork is characterized by a sense of monumentality and large figures with bold, forceful gestures. His style contrasted with the smooth, classical typologies popularized by his contemporary Guido Reni. The present painting is a mature work by Tiarini, dated to between 1615 and the early-1620s or mid-1620s.
