    Soviet painter Alexander Samokhvalov graduated in 1923 from the Imperial Academy of Arts, later also known as Ilya Repin-Institute, where he studied, among others, under Vasily Beliaev, Gugo Zaleman and Vasily Shukhaev. Since the late 1920s, his images reveal motives that are subject to the Socialist realism, but also portraits, historical and genre paintings in monumental as well as small formats.

    He is co-founder as well as respected member of the Leningrad school of painting and the Leningrad Union of Artists. In 1925 and 1927 he was awarded with the Gold Medal at the international Paris Art Fair, in 1937 he won the Grand Prix at the Paris World Exhibition.
