Alfred Frederic Krenz was born on May 3, 1899 in Vienna, Austria. He graduated from the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna and then enrolled at the Viennese Art Academy, where he excelled as a portrait painter. His studies continued at the Meisterschule under Professor Rudolf Bacher and later under Amedee Ozenfant in Paris.[1]

The Krenz family settled in Cape Town in 1949, where, on their arrival Krenz opened an art school. The Austrian Government bestowed on him the honorary title of professor in 1958, while in 1967 he received the medal for painting from the South African Academy for Science and Art.
