    Alfred (Joseph Auguste) Van Neste was a Belgian artist known for his Impressionistic landscapes and street scenes. The painter was also a printmaker and illustrator, designing posters, books, and other visual materials in an Art Nouveau style.

    Born on March 4, 1874 in Bruges, Belgium, Van Neste studied with Hendrik Pickery and Florimond van Acker as a child, and served as an apprentice in Van Acker’s studio for five years before enrolling in Antwerp’s Academy of Fine Arts.

    He traveled between Antwerp and Bruges regularly to capture migratory patterns of birds each spring in his characteristically subdued hues and animated brushwork.

    Van Neste died in 1969 in Uccle, Belgium.
