About Allen Ruppersberg

  • Biography

    A conceptual artist born in Cleveland, Ohio and spending time in California but living primarily in New York City, Allen Ruppersberg studied at the Chouinard Art Institute, earning a BFA degree in 1967. He began his career as a painter but soon switched to a method he found more challenging, which was utilizing books, text and photographs of which, for each, he collected thousands of items---mostly about popular American culture.

    As both a collector and artist, he created an elaborate web-based project called The New Five Foot Shelf, which is the contents of a book collection of nearly 800 pages of encyclopedic text written by the artist as well as photographs from his New York studio at 611 Broadway ...
