    Almir da Silva Mavignier was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1925. He left for Germany and studied at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm between 1953 and 1958 where his own practice developed under the tutelage of Josef Albers and Max Bill.

    In the mid-to late 1950s, Mavignier began to produce geometrically driven paintings which used color and form to create a surface which optically vibrated. The works would later give way to a series of works which he called "permutations" or "deformed squares."

    In 1958 Mavignier was a founding member of the artist group Zero, an influential collective working in Europe which included artists associated with Arte Povera, Minimalism, Op art and Kine...
