Amaldus Nielsen
  • Biography

Amaldus Nielsen was a landscape painter and is particularly famous for his coastal motifs. He is regarded as Norway's first open-air painter, as he only painted outdoors in front of the subject from the 1860s on. Among Nielsen's coastal motives is "Morning in New Hellesund" from 1885.

Between 1881 and 1899 he painted a dozen versions of New Hellesund. He painted Southern and Western Norway, coastal and inland landscapes. He is also called our first naturalist - when young Norwegian naturalists such as Erik Werenskiold and Christian Krogh returned home from Paris with his new naturalistic program around 1880, Nielsen had already painted like this for 20 years.
