    Andre Fontenay was a French painter born in Paris in 1913. He studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and later at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. He exhibited his works for the first time in 1937 at the Salon des Tuileries. In 1940, Fontenay was captured by the Germans and spent five years as a prisoner of war.

    During this time, he continued to paint, and some of his works were smuggled out of the camp and exhibited in Paris. After the war, Fontenay became a professor at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs, where he taught until 1979. He also continued to exhibit his works, including at the Salon des Independants and the Salon d'Automne.
