His favorite themes were drawn from his surroundings; the Ligurian coastline and sea, as well as the port of Genoa. His paintings were precise, smooth and delicate. As time passed, his style evolved and his work became more emotionally charged, particularly the marine views for which he was famous. After a short attempt at Divisionism, he adopted brushstrokes and a method of representing light more reminiscent of the French Impressionists.
