    Andries van Eervelt lived from 1590 to 1652. He is one of the most renowned Flemish naval painters, although his works are rare. In Antwerp between 1609 and 1627, he spent some years in Genoa, where he worked in the studio of Cornelis de Wael. On his return to Antwerp in 1630, he remained there until his death and his students were Hendrick van Minderhout, Matthieu van Plattenberg and Kaspar van Eyck.

    In 1632, Anton van Dyck produced his portrait, an image of the success he had experienced during his lifetime, painting his sword at the side (canvas, 114 x 87 cm, after van Dyck, Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum, inv .SK-A-847).
