Anna Elisabeth Munch grew up in a home inspired by the thoughts of N. F. S. Grundtvig with art and culture as an important part of her upbringing. At the age of thirteen she received lessons in painting from Karl Jensen in 1889 and from 1891–1892 in C. N. Overgaard. After this she undertook a lengthy study tour in Italy and Paris with her mother and sister, accompanied only by a maid servant. She completed the journey in 1894 with months of lessons at Académie Julian under Jean Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant.
