  • Biography

Anthon van Rappard was a student of Lourens Alma Tadema and a mentor and friend of Vincent van Gogh.

In 1884, Van Rappard visited Vincent van Gogh in Nuenen twice, in May and in October. Vincent wrote about the May visit: "My dear Theo, just wanted to tell you that Rappard has been here for 10 days or so, and sends you his regards. As you can imagine, we've made several trips together to the weavers and all sorts of fine things outdoors" (letter no. 447).

After four years their friendship was eventually ended by a misunderstanding in their correspondence. The letters Van Gogh wrote to Van Rappard during their correspondence in the years 1881-1885 are a main source for Van Gogh's biography and work.
