  • Biography

Frederick Sandys was a painter, printmaker, and book illustrator who was acquainted with Dante Gabriel Rossetti in the 1860s. He participated in several exhibitions but never received the same attention as the first group of Pre-Raphaelites. He was accused of plagiarism and cut off all relationships with Rossetti. The painting titled "Flower of the Mind" depicts Marianne Shingles, a silk weaver from Norfolk who was the sister of Sandys' sister's brother. She sat as a model for Sandys on multiple occasions.
