    Antonio Carneiro was born in Amarante in 1872.

    It was in Porto that Antonio discovered his vocation for drawing at an early age. In 1884 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts of Porto, and was a disciple of Marques de Olive ira and later of João António Correia.

    In 1897 he received a scholarship in Paris, attending the Julian Academy and being a disciple of Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant.

    In 1900 Carneiro was awarded a medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. He also became famous as a portraitist.

    He was an author of poetry and a Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts of Porto. His painting denotes a departure from Naturalism and a strong literary inspiration, marked by Symbolism.
