    His first exhibition was in 1946/1947 at the age of 17 as part of the Hof art exhibition "Young Painters". In 1960 he received the Lichtwark Scholarship and in 1972 he was awarded the Edwin Scharff Prize. He received the prize of the International Drawing Competition Nuremberg in 1980 and the Friedrich Baur Prize for Fine Arts from the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in 1992. After becoming a full member of the Free Academy of Arts in Hamburg in 1972, he served as its president from 1980 to 2011. In 1989, the Hamburg Senate appointed him honorary professor in recognition of his work. In 2002, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.
