Jean Baptiste Arthur Calame, son of Alexandre Calame, received his first artistic training from his father in 1860. After Alexandre Calame’s death in 1864, he moved to Düsseldorf, where he attended Oswald Achenbach’s landscape painting classes at the Royal Academy of Art and joined the Malkasten artists’ association. His oeuvre comprises landscapes, vedute, and marine subjects, inspired by extensive travels through Switzerland, Italy, and France. Italian motifs in particular left a lasting imprint on his work. In addition to painting, he was active as an illustrator.
