    August Ferdinand Hopfgarten was born in 1807. August Friedrich Hopfgarten was a student at the Academy of Arts in Berlin; there, thanks to his painting “Akrisius, his daughter Danae and her son Perseus”, he was granted a scholarship to study in Rome. Hopfgarten lived in the eternal city, where he was member of the German painters circle, for more than five years. August painted mainly romantic landscapes with historical scenes or portraits of his fellow painters; subjects he continued working on upon his return in Germany. Hopfgarten passed away in 1896.
