    Auguste Henri Carli was a French artist born in Marseille, known for his plaster sculptures. He was a pupil of Jules Cavelier and Ernest Barrias. Carli achieved recognition when he was awarded a first-class medal at the 1902 Salon des Artistes Français for his work "L'esprit et la matière." He donated the first version of this piece to his hometown museum and later presented a monumental marble version commissioned by the city of Clermont-Ferrand at the 1911 Salon.
