    Augustus William Enness was born in Essex, England on February 12, 1876 and studied at the Slade School of Art and the Academie Julian in Paris. He worked from an address in Whitby, Yorkshire between 1905 and 1915 when he moved to St. John's Wood in London where he remained until 1937.

    He was principally known as a landscape painter and worked in oils, depicting many rural scenes of Southern England, especially in Sussex and Suffolk. He also painted coastal landscapes in France, Continental views and scenes in the Lake District.

    He was elected an Associate member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1923 and became a full member in 1925.
