In 1822 he joined the studio of his elder brother, the painter Léopold Robert, in Rome and attended drawing courses at the Académie de France. He soon developed his own compositions, and in 1831 one of his works shown at the Paris Salon received a gold medal. In 1822 he joined the studio of his elder brother, the painter Léopold Robert, in Rome and attended drawing courses at the Académie de France. He soon developed his own compositions, and in 1831 one of his works shown at the Paris Salon received a gold medal. Deeply affected by his brother’s suicide in Venice in 1835, he left Italy, returning briefly in 1838 before settling in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1844 and later in Ried near Biel. Early in his career he painted genre scenes, interiors, and copies after Léopold; after 1843 he increasingly specialized in portraiture, initially with a restrained palette and later in grisaille.
