About Benjamin Cam Norton

  • Biography

Charles Wood was an English jockey who was apprenticed to trainer Joseph Dawson at the age of eleven. He became Champion in 1897 and won the Triple Crown on Galtee More. Wood formed a racing partnership with Sir George Chetwynd, which regularly broke the rules of the Jockey Club. Wood owned some of the horses he rode, which was forbidden, and piloted them with an eye on Sir George's wagers. This led to Sir George leaving the Turf and Wood being warned off for ten years. He returned to racing after the ban was lifted.
