About Benny Andrews

  • Biography

Best known for large collage paintings on canvas, Benny Andrews did work that verges on caricature, many of them related to his African-American heritage in the South.

He was raised in Morgan County, Georgia and was baptized in the Plainview Baptist Church, a subject he depicted in a body of work titled The Revival Series. In this series of about 26 drawings and gouaches, he explores the theme of the Christian religion in society.

Another series is a chronicle of the life of his brother, who committed suicide.

Bennie Andrews died of cancer on November 10, 2006.
