    Bernard Aubertin was born in 1934 in Fontenay-aux-Roses, France, and passed away in 2015 in Reutlingen, Germany. Aubertin was a defining figure in post-war European abstraction and a key member of the international ZERO movement. His radical visual language centered on the expressive power of red and the elemental force of fire.

    In 1957, Bernard Aubertin met Yves Klein, whose monochromatic blue paintings inspired him to pursue his own path in red. The following year, he began producing his first monochromes, and by 1960 launched his Tableaux Clous series—panels embedded with nails and painted entirely in red.
