About Bernd Berner

  • Biography from Auctionata

Bernd Berner was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1930. After training as a lithographer, Bernd moved to Stuttgart in 1952, where he met Willi Baumeister. In the context of the development of the non-figurative painting of European Modernism in the 1950's, Bernd coined the notion of flächenraum, which meant overwriting and overpainting, forming a dense mesh which can be found in the majority of his works. Bernd had studios in Stuttgart, Berne and Paris. From 1971 to 1974, he held a professorship for painting at the Fachhochschule für Gestaltung in Pforzheim. Many of his works can be found in numerous public and private collections, including the Statts Galerie, Stuttgart, the National Galerie in Berlin and the Thompson Collection in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Bernd Berner died in 2002, in Stuttgart, Germany.
