Bernd Berner was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1930. After training as a lithographer, Bernd moved to Stuttgart in 1952, where he met Willi Baumeister. In the context of the development of the non-figurative painting of European Modernism in the 1950's, Bernd coined the notion of flächenraum, which meant overwriting and overpainting, forming a dense mesh which can be found in the majority of his works.
