    The farmer's son, Bernhard Oscarsson, grew up in Lids parish, near Nyköping. Oscarsson studied at Althin's painting school in Stockholm 1917-1918 and at the Academy of Fine Arts 1919-1921 where he also participated in Axel Tallberg's etching course. Oscarsson was awarded the Chancellor's Medal in 1920 and the Royal Medal in 1921.

    After his studies, Bernhard undertook several study trips to France, Italy and Spain. He participated in group exhibitions arranged by the Uppsala Group, the Free Group of Sweden's general art association and at Liljevalch's art gallery.
