Bruce Graham is a Wyoming artist known for his ability to capture dramatic light and color in his western oil paintings. Trained as an illustrator at Utah State University, he began his full-time career as a western artist in 1991.
Graham was born 1961 in New York City and spent most of his childhood in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, where he was the only child on the beach wearing cowboy boots. Graham, whose grandfather had owned the Two Dot Ranch, near Cody, Wyoming, had an early connection to cowboys and western art. Surrounded by stories of cowboy life and fascinated by his grandfather's collection of fine western paintings, which included pieces by Russell, Bierstadt and Moran, Graham was determined to make a life for himself which included both art and horses.
Although his subject matter ranges from cowboys and horses to Native Americans and landscapes, his work is unified in his use of color and light. "I watch for the dramatic light that we see out here in the west," Graham says. "Most of my paintings are set in the morning or evening when the sun is low on the horizon. It's that time of day when even a seasoned cowboy will stop for a second to appreciate the amazing glow of sunlight on a horse's back."
Graham's studio is located in Buffalo, Wyoming at the foot of the Bighorn Mountains. He uses his cowboy friends and neighbors as models, and his own horses appear in many of his paintings.
Graham has participated in Mountain Oyster Club Show in Tucson, the Settlers West Miniature Shows, Phippen Museum Western Art Show, and Cheyenne Frontier Days Western Art Show. He received the 2004 Artist's Choice Award, as well as the 1995 People's Choice Award, at the Buffalo Bill Art Show in Cody, Wyoming.
