Carl Trägårdh lived from 1861 to 1899. He moved to France in the mid 1880s and fully committed to impressionism. Unlike other Swedish artists who traveled to Paris, Grez and the Atlantic coast at this time, Trägårdh did not return to Sweden, but continued to portray the French landscape until his death in Paris in 1899. Trägårdh's importance as painter was discovered for a wider audience only in 1925 in connection with the memorial exhibition at the Swedish-French Art Gallery in Stockholm.

A large part of his production had been acquired by the French opera singer J. B. Faure, most famous as the great collector of Anders Zorn's work, and his painting was thus invisible to a broader audience in Sweden. ...
