In 1858, he started studying at the Academy of Arts in Karlsruhe as pupil of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. Here he also had his own studio from 1861 to 1864. In 1858 the Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden, the Margrave Max von Baden and the Grand Duke Michael of Russia acquired some of his hunting scenes. From 1864 onwards, he was based in Dusseldorf and from 1865 to 1892 he was a member of artists association Malkasten.
