He was initially a student at the Hanover School of Applied Arts and later a student at the Munich painting school of Anton Azbe. He studied from 1897 at the Munich Academy under Paul Hoecker and Ludwig von Herterich. In 1911 he became a member of the Munich Secession, of which he was part of the exhibition jury. He studied from 1897 at the Munich Academy under Paul Hoecker and Ludwig von Herterich. In 1911 he became a member of the Munich Secession, of which he was part of the exhibition jury. From 1927 professor he maintained a private painting school in Munich and visited the Haimhausen artists' colony with his students in the summer.
