    Carl Maria Nicolaus Hummel was born in 1821 as the son of the composer Johann Nepomuk. From 1834-42 he was a student of Friedrich Preller the Elder in Weimar with whom he traveled to Holland, Norway, and Tyrol as well as Rome, Sicily and Corsica. In Italy he found most of his subjects, inspired by the ‘heroic landscapes’ of his teacher.

    Later he traveled mostly to the German Central Mountains and painted with preference motives of the limestone mountains around Jena. He exhibited his works, among others, within in the Academy exhibitions and the Great Art Exhibition in Berlin. Some of his works are to be found in the collection of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
