    Born in Chatelaillon on October 22, 1860, Lenoir endured a troubled childhood, only to grow into one of the more iconic artists of the 19th century. Though he began his career as teacher, Lenoir worked and saved enough money so that he could devote all of his time to painting. In 1882 Lenoir competed in the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts, followed by admittance to the Julian Academy where he polished his artistic skills. Numerous quotes from his colleagues were recorded which note Lenoir's ambition to succeed in the arts.
