It is believed Codman apprenticed with clockmakers, Simon and Aaron Willard of Roxbury and after that sign-painter, John Ritto Penniman of Roxbury and Boston. In 1828, art critic John Neal touted his work, having seen it on a visit to Portland, and this recognition was a significant boost to Codman's career.
