He began his studies with the marine painter Wilhelm Krause in Berlin, then moved to Paris where he continued with the landscape painter Bertin, who had also been the master of Corot, with Paul Delaroche, with Hildebrand, and with Louis-Gabriel-Eugène Isabey.
