Among his sitters were Oliver Wendell Holmes, Calvin Coolidge, and John Masefield. He began to draw for the "Lampoon" upon his entrance to Harvard in 1888, and in 1891, he moved to New York to study at the Art Students' League where he worked with John Twachtman and H.
