    Philadelphia artist, Charles Knapp made his debut exhibition in 1859 with "Scene on the Houstatonic River, Stockbridge, Massachusetts" at the National Academy of Design and continued to exhibit there until 1861. During the following two years he exhibited in New York and continued to paint landscapes, his specialty. He returned to Philadelphia and succeeded in having the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts purchase his painting, "Delaware Valley."

    The titles of his known works indicate that he painted pastoral landscapes set in New England and the Catskills.
